Welcome!   We are located at the south end of Petroglyph National Monument, on the very western edge of Albuquerque, New Mexico.  (Starry, starry night...)    Designed as a comfortable ecotourist destination, there are two guest bedrooms which are ideal for travelers who  want to escape the bustle of the city and enjoy the ancient cultural and geologic area, while staying in peaceful, clean and comfortable surroundings.  (Rates and reservations:  see below.)

PGH is in a contemporary southwestern home where it's only 10 minutes by freeway to "Old Town" Albuquerque and museums.   The nearby petroglyphs were pecked onto the basalt rock faces by native americans over  thousands of years.   The earliest known archaeological sites date from 1500 bc to 500 ad, while  Folsom (Jay) projectile points have been found circa 11-8,000 B.P.

The best parts are the views and quiet of Petroglyph National Monument.  Just 50 yards west of the home is a spectacular view of the Rio Grande Valley, from the Manzano mountains, past the Sandias, to the Sangre de Cristos, near Santa Fe.  The patio views of Albuquerque's escarpment are outstanding.

The arroyo that runs south of the guest house is home to a multitude of birds living in the desert willow trees.   As the seasons change, different species may be sighted during an easy hike.  Petroglyphs, too, abound near the guest house, although the most famous rock drawings are a quick drive north to Piedras Marcadas, Boca Negra or Rinconanda canyons.  The five Albuquerque volcanoes are an easy drive just west and north.  Mesa Prieta, a basalt outcrop, and Rinconada Canyon are a healthy hike from the guest house.

If you're lucky, you'll hear coyotes in the evening.  During the day, quail often squawk from the mesa, and raptors soar on the wind currents round the escarpment.  In the back yard, the usual suspects of robins, finches, sparrows, mocking birds and hummers routinely visit.

Hiking is great any time during Spring, Fall and Winter.  In the Summer, morning hiking is recommended.   Albuquerque is "high desert"  and many of the trails are old roads or cattle paths.  We can help you select routes for the best scenery, most petroglyphs, or just an easy stroll.  Anywhere you choose to hike, though, you'll have great views and petroglyphs.

Other activities?   City biking trails begin just east of the home, and there is great mountain biking up at the Volcanoes.  Rock hounds have enjoyed hunting  pieces of petrified wood in the sand hills just south of the Monument.  Or, bring your golf clubs, a beautiful city course is just five minutes away.

Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta?   We are already booked October lst-9th, 2010.  Still have availability before and after those dates. Minimum two night bookings during Balloon Fiesta.  ( We can take your reservation for next year....Oct 1-9, 2011!!)   www.balloonfiesta.com

Balloons regularly fly over the house, but we've been lucky enough to have a balloon drop in for breakfast, and the pilot recruited guests to help it land and pack  it up.
