High vaulted ceilings, an open concept and spacious windows bring the outdoors in. The floor plan places the owner's suite and the guest rooms on opposite sides of the house with the great room and kitchen in the center. So-- guests have a real sense of privacy. The nearby pueblo ruins of Piedras Marcadas, are owned by the City and are unexcavated. But the best parts are the views and quiet of Petroglyph National Monument. Just 50 yards west of the home is a spectacular view of the Rio Grande Valley, from the Manzano mountains, past the Sandias, to the Sangre de Cristos, near Santa Fe. The arroyo that runs south of the guest house is home to a multitude of birds living in the desert willow trees. As the seasons change, different species may be sighted during an easy hike. Petroglyphs, too, abound near the guest house, although the most famous rock drawings are a quick drive north to Piedras Marcadas, Boca Negra or Rinconanda canyons. The five Albuquerque volcanoes are an easy drive just west and north. Mesa Prieta, a basalt outcrop, and Rinconada Canyon are a healthy hike from the guest house. ......The Neighbors.... If you're lucky, you'll hear coyotes in the evening. During the day, scaled quail often squawk from the mesa, and raptors soar on the wind currents round the escarpment. In the back yard, the usual suspects of robins, finches, sparrows, mocking birds and hummers routinely visit. Hiking is great any time during Spring, Fall and Winter. In the Summer, morning hiking is recommended. Albuquerque is "high desert" and many of the trails are old roads or cattle paths. We can help you select routes for the best scenery, most petroglyphs, or just an easy stroll. Anywhere you choose to hike, though, you'll have great views and petroglyphs. Alison's Hike: http://alisondomzalski.com/blog/2011/08/10/petroglyph-hunting-at-sunrise/ Other activities? City biking trails begin just east of the home, and there is great mountain biking up at the Volcanoes. Rock hounds have enjoyed hunting pieces of petrified wood in the sand hills just south of the Monument. Or, bring your golf clubs, a beautiful city course is just five minutes away. Some guests get up just before dawn to hike trails and stargaze. Flashlights are provided, and they report the stars look close enough to touch them. The Lights of Albuquerque, down in the Rio Grande Valley, never fail to dazzle. Albuquerque Balloon Fiesta? October 5-14, 2012. www.balloonfiesta.com Two night minimum during Fiesta. Balloons regularly fly over the house, but we've been lucky enough to have a balloon drop in for breakfast, and the pilot recruited guests to help it land and pack it up.
